Mass Merchant and Big Box store Grills

The truth about Charbroil, Members
Mark, Bakers Chef, Jenn Air,
GrillWare, Home Depot Charmglow,
Kirkland, Kenmore, Brinkmann.
All of these grills are made in China by
various factories (Grand Hall, Nex Grill
are some of the largest).
Besides the fact that there have been
many recalls on the Chinese made
grills, none of these stores carry parts
for these grills.
The stores leave you to call an 800
number in the owners manual for any
potential warranty parts. The Chinese
factories vary models constantly, and
are not held to U.S. Manufacturing
standards. Models and parts may be
here today gone tomorrow.
In our experience the burners and heat
plates are lasting about 2 to 3
seasons. Since the parts come from
China, they carry a large premium.
The average burner is $21.95 -
$48.95, also the average heat plate is
$21.95 to $48.95. These grills have 3
to 6 burners The repair costs usually
make these grills disposable. The
igniter system typically costs around
$60.00 (due to the need for multiple
collector boxes).
The inexpensive disposable grills price range used to be around $99.99 to
$229.99. This made them a reasonable buying decision. These new grills
price range is $299.99 to $1399.00, and they do not last more than a few
seasons with out serious repair costs. That could leave you with a price of
$100.00 to $150.00 per year. I recommend figuring a cost per year when
purchasing your grill. Figure the price of a $299.99 to $899.99 Weber or a
Vermont Casting with a true 10 year burner warranty, which will average you
$30 - $90 per year.
Buy purchasing these grills, you sacrifice size for lasting quality, and
potentially safety.
